The Lakers finally waived the young Chinese guard Sun Yue on Friday in an effort to take about $1.5 million off the books. They had until Aug 1 to exercise their option on him and avoid paying $100,000 in guaranteed money.
Yue was billed as the Chinese "Magic Johnson" when entering the draft in 2007. The Lakers considered the second round pick a long term project and allowed him only 28 minutes in 10 games last season for a total of 6 points.
This situation should benefit both sides as the Lakers need to save money and Sun needs to be on a team where he can actually get some experience. The Lakers are just far too deep to keep around a player like Sun that still needs to develope his game.
Honestly, I'm surprised they kept him around so long. I saw Sun play during the Beijing Olympics and he looks to have great potential but could not seem to hit a shot to save his life when playing in very limited minutes for the Lakers.
I think he will be a solid player in a few years but will never be truly comparable to the Magic man, thats just an unfair comparison for anyone.
